Recently, we received a notice that several types of canned dog food sold by Hills Pet Nutrition in Western Canada have been voluntarily recalled due to concerns over elevated Vitamin D levels. While we have checked our current stock and found none of these products, we ask our clients to please refer to this list provided by Hills, and make certain they do not have any of the listed products at home.
If you are uncertain about the food you have, feel free to bring it into the clinic, and one of our staff can cross-reference the product for you, to make sure that it isn’t one of the recalled items.
Please remember that not all dog food sold by Hills is affected! Only the canned products on the list are of potential concern. No dry dog foods, or dry or canned cat food is being recalled.
While Vitamin D is normally an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels, depending on the amount ingested and length of time the animal was exposed, can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. If you think your pet has any of these symptoms, contact a veterinarian.
If at any time you have concerns or questions about your pets’ diet or overall health, do not hesitate to contact the clinic at 306-721-1022.
